Generic Famvir

Generic Famvir is currently available and is sold as Famciclovir tablets. The drug comes in three strengths -- 125 mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg. Teva Pharmaceuticals is the manufacturer of generic Famvir.

 

Famvir Generic: An Overview

Famvir® (famciclovir) is a prescription medication that is used to treat the following conditions:
 
  • Recurring genital herpes in people with normal immune systems
     
  • Recurring cold sores in people with normal immune systems
     
  • Shingles in people with normal immune systems
     
  • Herpes simplex infections (including cold sores and genital herpes) in people with HIV or other conditions that weaken the immune system.
     
Famvir is made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. However, generic Famvir is now available.
 

Strengths of Generic Famvir

Generic Famvir tablets are available in the following strengths:
 
  • Famciclovir 125 mg
  • Famciclovir 250 mg
  • Famciclovir 500 mg.

Is Generic Famciclovir as Good as Famvir?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns each generic a rating. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic famciclovir versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Famvir.
 
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers or dyes or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
