Xerese Drug Information

Cold sores are a common infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Although there is no cure for a cold sore, there are medications that can help.

For example, XereseTM (acyclovir and hydrocortisone) is a prescription medicine licensed to treat cold sores in adults and children 12 years of age and older. It contains a combination of acyclovir and hydrocortisone, and comes in the form of a cream. Xerese is used to:

  • Shorten the time it takes for a cold sore to heal
  • Reduce the risk of a sore becoming worse.
  •
Although most people are able to use this product without any problems, side effects are possible, including redness and dry, flaky skin. This drug isn't the best choice for everyone, so make sure your healthcare provider has up-to-date information on your medical history and a list of any other medications you are taking -- especially other skin products -- before you start treatment.
