Available only by prescription, Xerese™ (acyclovir and hydrocortisone) is a medication used to treat cold sores. This combination drug contains two active ingredients that work together to reduce inflammation and fight the infection. It works best if started at the first signs of a cold sore, such as when you feel tingling, redness, and itching. The most commonly reported side effects include redness; a tingling sensation; and dry, flaky skin.
