Zovirax Cream Side Effects

Although most people do not experience problems while using Zovirax cream, side effects can occur. Common ones include dry lips, dry skin, and itching. In most cases, these side effects are minor and easily treated. However, if you develop a severe rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the mouth or throat, notify your healthcare provider right away as these side effects of Zovirax cream may be signs of a dangerous allergic reaction.

An Introduction to Zovirax Cream Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Zovirax® cream (acyclovir cream). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Zovirax cream. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Zovirax cream side effects with you.)

Common Zovirax Cream Side Effects

Zovirax cream has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials, in which the side effects of a group of people taking the drug are documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Zovirax cream included:
  • Dry lips
  • Peeling or flaking of the skin
  • Dry skin
  • Cracked lips
  • Burning or stinging
  • Itching.
Each of these side effects occurred in less than 1 percent of people taking Zovirax cream. Tell your healthcare provider if you experience any of the following, as these may be signs of a dangerous allergic reaction:
  • A severe rash
  • Severe itching
  • A rash that spreads beyond the area where the medication was applied
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the mouth or throat.
